최근 논술교육의 중요성이 부각되면서 근심거리가 하나 더 늘게 됐다. 즉 올해 시험을 치르는 수험생들은 논술시험에 대처하기 위한 초단기 전략을 마련해야 한다.

논술의 형태도 알고 있으면 학습에 도움이 된다. 요즘 논술은 요약형, 비교 분석형, 자료 해석형, 찬반토론형, 견해 제시형, 대안 제시형, 평가형 등 여러 가지 논제의 스타일에 맞춰 쓰는 통합교과형 논술이다.

통합교과형 논술은 개념과 이해, 적용과 대안이라는 논제 구조를 보이고 있다는 점, 즉 지식 습득 여부가 아닌 제시문 속에 주어진 정보를 수험생이 어떻게 이해하고 재구성해 자신의 의견을 일관된 논지로 펼치는가를 본다는 점을 유념해야 한다.

무엇보다 급하게 학습량을 늘리기보다는 규칙적으로 학습을 하는 게 중요하다는 점도 잊지 말아야 한다.

그렇다면 수험생에 비해 시간적 여유가 있는 예비 수험생들은 어떻게 논술을 준비해야 할까?

둘째, 형식의 문제인데 논리적 글쓰기를 해야 한다는 점이다. 글의 내용과 형식이 일치하지 않고, 논리성이 모자라며 짜임새가 없는 글들은 논술을 위한 기초가 안 돼 있다는 반증이다. 이 경우 단락(또는 문단)에 주목할 필요가 있다. 논리적인 글의 경우 단락은 논리 또는 생각을 펼쳐나가는 기본 단위가 된다. 짜임새 있는 논리나 흐름이 자연스러운 논리를 펴려면 논리의 기본 단위인 단락 하나를 잘 쓸 줄 알아야 한다. 하나의 일관된 맥락으로 단락을 구성하는 것이 글쓰기의 기본 또는 기초가 된다는 것이다.

셋째, 내용 측면에서 볼 때 좋은 글이라 하면 호소력 있는 글, 설득력 있는 글, 흥미진진한 글, 감동적인 글 등인데, 이를 위해서는 스토리텔링 학습이 필요하다. 어떤 글을 쓰더라도 이야기를 만들며 쓸 줄 아는, 스토리 속에서 글을 전개하게 되면 글이 흥미진진하고 주목도가 높아진다. 춘향전이나 심청전 같은 오래된 이야기에서부터 미국의 오바마 대통령의 자서전 '내 아버지로부터의 꿈' 등과 같은 최근작에 이르기까지 다른 사람의 공감을 이끌어내는 글들의 공통점은 이야기의 구조를 띠고 있다는 것이다. 글쓰기에도 스토리텔링이 필요하다. 특히 맥락이 있는 이야기는 지성과 감성을 동시에 자극한다.
